Carolé Acuña

Acuña Danza Teatro

Artistic Director of Acuña Danza Teatro Biography

Carolé’s mission for Acuña Danza Teatro is to progress Flamenco in revolutionary directions while continuing to preserve it’s rich artistic traditions. This company thrives on creating dance, theater and music performances that engage the community to think, laugh, and have an open dialogue regarding an array of topics . Carolé does this by the careful use of traditional flamenco, Spanish dance, modern dance, theater, and comedy to bring this tradition to varied generations of audiences. Each dance and theatre piece is constructed to give specific focus to tradition or excogitation.

Carolé’s combination of traditional and modern ideas has composed a novel dimension in Flamenco; prompting dialogues with the audience about themselves such as love, shattering assumptions, and life-cycles. Her unique choreography is lithe, forceful, and full of energetic expression.

Being the  fifth generation Flamenco dancer, the traditions of flamenco song and music are deeply rooted in Carolé’s family and are passed down from one generation to the next. Therefore, she began her formal training with her mother, Carolina Lugo, and then went on to study extensively in Spain with renowned Flamenco artist Pepa Montes. Carolé is regarded as one of the most prominent young artists in flamenco & Spanish dance.

Ms. Acuña and her company, Acuña Danza Teatro (founded in 2009) – represent a diversity of cultures from around the globe, appearing in a broad spectrum of creative mediums. They have presented their work at The West Wave Dance Festival, Cowell Theater, Brava Theater, and other theatrical venues.

Acuña Danza Teatro is a sub-division of Carolina & Carolé Ballet Flamenco and has received support from the Azahar Dance Foundation.
